Safe Kids Pedestrian Contest

Mecklenburg County 4-H is privileged to be a partner with
Safe Kids Charlotte Mecklenburg.

This is a coalition of government, health, and safety agencies; educators; corporations; and people like YOU who are interested in preventing childhood injury and death in Mecklenburg County. The Safe Kids Charlotte Mecklenburg coalition provides leadership to Mecklenburg County in an effort to reduce unintentional childhood injury. The coalition’s primary focus is to educate children, parents, caregivers, and the public; advocate for child safety; and conduct injury prevention programs in Mecklenburg County.

We are currently promoting a Safe Kids Pedestrian Contest for middle school youth between the ages of 10 and 14 years old in an effort to raise awareness of the dangers of walking distracted and incorrectly.

Charlotte is the 10th city in the nation with the most pedestrians hit by motor vehicles when crossing the road. In over 90 percent of our local cases, the pedestrian is trying to cross mid block not at crosswalks or without stopping and accounting for traffic. This is referred to as a “dart out”. In many of the adolescent cases, they are wearing headphones or texting while walking in or near the road.

**This is a GREAT opportunity for our 4-H’ers who have been involved with the 4-H Filmmaking curriculum and those who have partnered with us to be a part of other Healthy Living and Safety initiatives (i.e. filming the Mecklenburg County Fire & Life Safety Bowl).**
