Registration for the 2025 4-H Egg-cellent Egg Contest is open! The contest kicks off in August 2025 and runs through September 2025.
What is the Egg-cellent Egg Contest?
The Egg-cellent Egg Contest is a program for youth who have a flock of chickens that are currently laying eggs. Participants can submit up to 2 sets of half a dozen (6) eggs, which will be judged for the following; uniformity, exterior and interior quality. 4-Hers will learn more about egg production and compete against other members in the participating region. All participants that successfully complete the project will receive a t-shirt and ribbon (either participation or placing ribbon).
What is required to participate?
- Enroll in 4-H Online
- Register by August 1st and pay the $15 fee
- Attend the two Zoom meetings (orientation on Aug. 5th and in-depth training on Aug. 19th)
- Submit eggs and supplemental portion
- Winners will be announced on the September 30th Zoom meeting!
Who is able to participate?
Any youth in North Carolina between the ages of 5-18 (by Jan 1st of 2025) that is enrolled in 4-H Online is eligible to participate. If you are not currently enrolled, you can enroll in 4-H Online for free today as a member-at-large. Instructions for enrollment can be found here: 4-H Online Enrollment
Mecklenburg County 4-H is participating in the Egg-cellent Egg Contest this year and we welcome any youth in our county who want to participate to sign up and reach out with questions. Previous involvement in 4-H is not necessary.

How do I pay?
The registration fee is $15 per youth and due by August 22nd, 2025. Please make checks or money orders payable to Hoke County 4-H and send your check or money order to:

What type of eggs are submitted?
Eggs must be chicken eggs. Participants must submit either 6 eggs or 12 eggs. If submitting 12 eggs (2 sets of 6) the 2 sets of eggs must be in different categories.
The categories are as follows:
- Colors: Brown, white, blue/green
- Size: Peewee, small, med, large, extra large, jumbo
More information regarding how to classify your eggs will be shared during the two Zoom meetings.
What is the supplemental portion?
In addition to the eggs that will be submitted, youth will also be judged on the supplemental portion of their application. This portion varies depending on age. Participants age is determined by Jan 1st, 2025 and the age categories are as follows:
- Ages 5-7: Cloverbud
- Ages 8-10: Junior
- Ages 11-13: Intermediate
- Ages 14-18: Senior

August 5 at 6 p.m. – Initial Training via Zoom – Zoom link will be sent before the training
August 19 – Egg-citing, In Depth Egg Training- Zoom link will be sent before the training
August 22 – Registration fee is due to Hoke County 4-H. No refunds are available.
September 17 – Eggs & supplemental portion submissions due. * because we must get these eggs to Raleigh for judging, eggs may be due a day early to the Mecklenburg County Extension office (2415 Lester Street).
September 30 at 6:00 p.m. – Winners announced on Zoom
