Mecklenburg County 4-H Clubs

Mecklenburg County currently has one 4-H Club, the South Charlotte Clovers. The South Charlotte 4-H Club is primarily composed of high school students and meets at the Elon Recreation Center. The club strives to offer high schoolers opportunities related to STEM, public speaking, and volunteering.

This club has experienced numerous successes and growth over this past year. Recent accomplishments include: members of the South Charlotte Club attending NC 4-H Congress and presenting a workshop, partnering with Queen City News to be featured in their program “QC Homegrown,” and receiving a scholarship from National 4-H! What are 4-H Clubs?

4-H Clubs are organized groups that meet regularly with adult volunteers for a long-term, progressive series of educational experiences. 4-H clubs follow a planned program and offer learning opportunities for youth. Clubs can meet in a variety of locations, including virtually, and typically meet in the evenings or on the weekends.

What is the purpose of a 4-H Club?

4-H Clubs provide opportunities for youth to learn life skills, participate in hands on projects and learn by doing, develop leadership skills, build positive relationships with peers and adults, and much more!

What type of clubs can be created?

4-H Clubs vary and are meant to serve the interests and needs of those participating. Clubs may focus on youth leadership, projects, or a specific topic. They also can be community based or school based.

Who can be in a 4-H Club?

In North Carolina, 4-H is free and open to any youth ages 5-18 years old. To participate in any 4-H activity, youth must be enrolled in 4-HOnline.

Who makes up a 4-H Club?

4-H Club vary in membership. Clubs may be specific to a certain age group or topic. To form a 4-H Club, there must be at least five youth from three different families.

What is required of a 4-H Club?

4-H clubs must have six regular club meetings per year, must meet in an approved location (for example, school, library, recreation center, approved home location, etc), must have adult volunteers or staff present, and must meet the interests/needs of youth in same-age or cross-age groupings by using single project or multiple project formats.

Why start or join a 4-H club?

There are many positive benefits of 4-H participation. Learn life skills, make friends, learn by doing, engage in hands-on and interest based projects, access educational curriculum, give back to the community, create positive connections with others, gain leadership skills and experience, build self confidence, and participate in 4-H activities on the local, statewide, and national level.
