Mecklenburg County 4-H supports youth agriculture education and local farmers by running the embryology program! In the embryology program, fertilized chick eggs are sourced locally and incubated in classrooms. Once the chicks hatch, they are returned to the office to be vaccinated before returning to our local farmers.

We need help to vaccinate these chicks with the Marek’s vaccine! This event will be held at the N.C Cooperative Extension, Mecklenburg County Center (2415 Lester Street) from 2:45-4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23rd. No previous experience or 4-H involvement required.

Anyone who is in high school or older is welcome to participate. This event is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to see chicks, for anyone who raises or plans to raise chickens, and for anyone interested in gaining experience with needles, vaccinations, and animal wellbeing.

Once the vaccine has been mixed, we only have ONE HOUR to vaccinate all the chicks with the Marek’s vaccine. We expect about 80 chicks will hatch and need vaccination. To maximize efficiency and allow for volunteers to do what feels comfortable for them, we have several options volunteers can choose from. These include:

  1. Chick Handler: The chick handler will help keep our chicks organized during the event. Great for anyone who is looking to hold and see chicks.
  2. Chick Holder: Hold a chick while another person administers the vaccinate. This role is meant for those who want to hold a chick and see a close up of the vaccination process without doing it themselves.
  3. Vaccination Prepper: Load syringes with the vaccination and hand them off. Perfect for anyone ready to see and handle syringes, medication, and needles but does not want to inject the vaccine into chicks themselves.
  4. Chick Vaccinator: Administer the Marek’s vaccine to our chicks. This role is meant for those ready to get hands on experience and use needles.
