Extension Master Gardener Volunteers

Extension Master Gardener℠ volunteers in Mecklenburg County are trained to guide homeowners in making environmentally sound decisions in their landscapes. This guidance is based on reliable, research-based information from educational institutions, like North Carolina State University.

Our volunteer team:

  • Teaches gardening and environmental education classes at libraries, schools, and other community locations
  • Diagnoses insect/disease/pest problems through our Horticulture Help Desk
  • Consults with organizations and groups interested in starting a community garden
  • Supports Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation’s community gardens by teaching classes, troubleshooting problems, and demonstrating good gardening techniques
  • Participates in community events, like hosting information tables at area farmers markets
  • Maintains two demonstration gardens that provide hands-on experience to participants in the EMG program and offer the public information about growing conditions of various plants in the Piedmont

With COVID-19, our in-person activities have been significantly affected. There are several ways to keep updated on the programs we’re offering.

Social Media

The Extension Master Gardener℠ program of Mecklenburg County has two robust social media sites. We encourage you to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for timely guidance on gardening, lawn, and pest topics as well as program updates, like online classes we might offer.

Monthly Newsletter

Sign up for Garden Zone, our monthly newsletter that is emailed to subscribers the first business day of the month and offers great tips on timely gardening topics.

EMGV Website

Explore our website. You can request help with a garden question. You can also request a speaker for your organization. Also, check our Publications page for guidance on several topics, like Right Plant Right Place, composting, and beneficial insects. Most of those publications were produced by volunteers in the Extension Master Gardener program of Mecklenburg County.
